Rise and shine, Las Vegas! Let's get you started this Thursday with everything you need to know going on around town today.
First, today's weather:
Sun through high clouds. High: 83 Low: 70.
Here are the top stories today in Las Vegas:
- A newspaper found a wave of Las Vegas-area school students missed school during the first month of in-person instruction due to COVID-19 infections or exposures. The records showed exclusions districtwide due to positive COVID-19 tests or exposure for the dates Aug. 9, 16, 23, 30 and Sept. 7. The newspaper reported that 816 students were excluded the first day of school. The figure jumped to 2,456 a week later, then more than tripled to 7,530 on Aug. 23. (Las Vegas Sun)
- Reduced travel and auto emissions during the pandemic last year were not enough to eliminate air quality issues in Clark County. Las Vegas Valley residents still experienced 96 days of elevated levels of air pollution in 2020, according to a new report by the Environment Nevada Research and Policy Center, Frontier Group and U.S. PRIG Education Fund. Solutions from the Environment Nevada Research and Policy Center include stronger infrastructure legislation to spark greener transportation projects. The report was released as Congress is assessing the Build Back better Act, which would create jobs in solar and other non-carbon forms of energy. (Las Vegas Sun)
- According to the airline, starting Nov. 1, British Airways will resume daily non-stop service between Las Vegas' McCarran Airport and London's Heathrow airport. (FOX5 Las Vegas)
- The Las Vegas City Council will soon be looking at a bill that would require any new public single-stall restroom to become gender-neutral. (KTNV Las Vegas)
- The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department are investigating a homicide after a family received an email from the victim stating that they'd be found dead inside their house. (KTNV Las Vegas)
