Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- In recognition of Black History Month, students at the Alice Smith Elementary School are honoring their school's namesake. Throughout the month, teachers are taking students on a deep dive of Alice Smith — one of Nevada's earliest civil rights leaders and the founder of the Reno-Sparks chapter of the NAACP. According to Principal Arch Ruth, lessons are adjusted to focus on the writings of Mrs. Smith, her life, and her accomplishments. (KRNV My News 4)
- The city-sponsored program "ReLEAF Reno" is making strides to preserve Reno's urban forestry. Currently, Reno's tree canopy sits at around 5 percent. However, the new proposed ordinance by the Urban Forestry Commission hopes to increase the city's tree canopy to 10 percent. (KOLO)
