1. Man accused of taking $40K from Reno youth basketball nonprofit arrested in Idaho (mynews4.com) — A man accused of taking $40,000 meant for a Reno youth basketball nonprofit's new court has been arrested in Idaho and faces possible extradition to Washoe County. Investigators are still determining potential Nevada charges, while Reno Tropics Basketball continues fundraising to recover and move forward with its planned facility for local kids.
2. Sunday's Journal Jog celebrates 55 years of running tradition in Reno (rgj.com subscription) — Reno runners and walkers can line up this Sunday for the 55th Journal Jog, starting and finishing at Reno High School and winding through Old Southwest Reno neighborhoods. With over 1,000 participants expected, the event features course refinements plus a Junior Jog and Stroller Race, inviting multiple generations to share in the city's longest-running road race tradition.
3. Red Cross opens Reno assistance hub after Bug and Stallion fires to connect with aid (mynews4.com) — Reno residents affected by the Bug and Stallion fires can get one-stop recovery help Friday and Saturday at Granite Hills Baptist Church on North Red Rock Road. The Local Assistance Center will bring together the Red Cross, Salvation Army, local churches, and nonprofits to offer disaster aid, clothing, food, mental health support, and guidance on longer-term recovery resources.
4. City of Reno installs detour as Truckee River Path remains blocked by property owner (mynews4.com) — Downtown Reno cyclists and pedestrians now have a new detour after a private property owner locked a gate blocking the Truckee River Path at Lake Street. The city, which lacks an easement from the 1972 path construction, is routing users via First Street and University Way and has briefed the Reno City Council, urging extra caution where bike traffic runs against cars.
5. Reducing wildfire fuels throughout Reno and Tahoe Basin (kolotv.com) — Wildfires have burned more than 100,000 acres in northern Nevada, and leaders meeting at Lake Tahoe say reducing fuels around Reno-Tahoe communities is now a top priority. Senators Jacky Rosen, Catherine Cortez Masto and Alex Padilla praised firefighters, highlighted large-scale fuel reduction projects, and emphasized funding, tribal partnerships and traditional fire practices to better protect local residents and the land.
