Containment Made In Hawk Fire Near Reno (iheart.com) — Firefighters have reached about 27% containment on the Hawk Fire near Reno, but tens of thousands of area residents still face evacuation orders or warnings as hot, dry weather persists. With dozens of homes destroyed, schools closed again, and roads still blocked, officials urge Reno-area residents to stay ready and follow updates from Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
2. Fire crews gain ground on destructive blaze raging near Reno, Nevada (miamiherald.com) — Fire crews have gained ground on the Hawk Fire that tore through Reno's outskirts, destroying at least 32 homes and forcing up to 90,000 residents to evacuate or prepare to leave. Containment has reached about 27%, some evacuations are easing, and no deaths are reported, but thousands of Reno-area residents remain displaced while hundreds of firefighters continue battling the human-caused blaze.
3. Reno Aces to donate 100% of ticket proceeds to help residents affected by Reno fires (mynews4.com subscription) — Reno Aces are donating 100% of select ticket sales this Tuesday through Thursday to help residents displaced by the Reno-area fires, with proceeds going to the Red Cross of Northern Nevada. If you buy designated $9 or $13 seats for the Sacramento River Cats series at Greater Nevada Field, your entire ticket price supports local fire relief while you catch a game.
4. Hawk Fire tops 15,000 acres near Reno, spurs 42,000 evacuations and remains out of control (stillwaterradio.net) — A human-caused Hawk Fire northwest of Reno has exploded past 15,000 acres, forcing about 42,000 evacuations, damaging homes, and prompting a state of emergency in Washoe County. Schools are closed, thousands remain without power, a Reno hospital and ER have evacuated or closed, and officials urge residents to follow evacuation orders as winds threaten more neighborhoods.
5. Jewish cultural festival, vintage aircraft displays are among this week's Reno events (thisisreno.com subscription) — Reno has a full slate of in-town events this week, from a Milk & Honey Jewish Cultural Festival at McKinley Arts Center to a retro 'Grease' night at the National Automobile Museum. Families can also explore vintage aircraft at Reno-Stead Airport Day, support fire-displaced neighbors at North Valleys Strong, or cheer local comics at Reno Improv.
