Wrongly arrested Reno casino guest seeks names of 168 people flagged by facial recognition (focusgn.com) — A Nevada truck driver is suing the City of Reno and a Reno police officer after facial recognition at Peppermill Casino allegedly led to his wrongful 2023 arrest, and he now wants names of 168 others flagged by the same system. The case could reveal how often Reno police relied on facial recognition and whether broader policy changes or class-action claims might follow.
2. UNR President Discusses Hawk Fire support and new school year (foxreno.com) — Students and families at the University of Nevada, Reno are starting the new school year as President Brian Sandoval outlines how UNR is supporting those affected by Hawk Fire evacuations while keeping classes going. He also previews major campus additions, from a proposed veterinary school and physical therapy program to new facilities like the Public Health Lab and an indoor field house.
3. Smith's Lemmon Drive store in Reno reopens after evacuation order lifted (mynews4.com) — Reno residents near Lemmon Drive can once again shop at the Smith's Food and Drug store, which has reopened after the Hawk Fire evacuation order was eased. Saint Mary's nurses in Reno to join 1-day strike across 3 states (rgj.com subscription) — Nurses at Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center in Reno plan a 24-hour strike from the morning of Sept. 3 to Sept. 4 over staffing and contract concerns with parent company Prime Healthcare. The hospital, already caring for Hawk Fire evacuees, criticizes the timing but says it will stay open, while union leaders argue unsafe staffing and stalled negotiations are hurting patient care.
5. School board trustees unanimously oppose Doral Academy expansion proposal (thisisreno.com) — Washoe County school trustees have formally opposed Doral Academy of Northern Nevada's plan to build a second campus on University of Nevada, Reno property and expand to K-12. The board's unanimous vote, while not binding, signals concerns about district finances, enrollment, and facilities as the proposal heads to the state charter school authority for a final decision.
