Hawk Fire 98% contained after burning 15,085 acres (rgj.com subscription) — The Hawk Fire threatening northwest Reno and the North Valleys is now 98% contained after forcing evacuations for about 42,000 people and burning over 15,000 acres on Peavine Peak. Most evacuation zones have reopened, but forest roads, trails, and recreation areas in burned sections remain closed as crews continue mop‑up and safety work while Burning Man proceeds nearby.
2. Firefighters continue to secure uncontained portion of the deadly Hawk Fire (kolotv.com) — Firefighters are tightening control on the deadly Hawk Fire northwest of Reno, which is 98% contained after destroying dozens of homes and killing one person. Crews are now focused on suppression repair, patrolling for remaining hot spots, and enforcing forest closures that keep burned‑area roads and trails off‑limits while management transitions back to local authorities.
3. Chamber EDU: Hands-On AI Workshop on September 18, 2026 (businessdailynetwork.com) — Reno professionals can get hands-on with AI tools at a Chamber EDU workshop hosted by the Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce and TMCC EPIC on September 18. The one-hour session at the Chamber's South Virginia Street office will compare major platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, then guide you through using them on your own business challenges.
4. Baseball and paleontology: Fossil named for Reno Aces pitcher (rgj.com subscription) — Reno Aces pitcher Bryce Jarvis just had a 215‑million‑year‑old Metopasaur fossil nicknamed "Jarvisaur" in his honor after impressing a visiting paleontologist. The recognition comes as Jarvis breaks into Reno's top 10 for career innings pitched, cementing his legacy both on the mound and in scientific history.
5. Burning Man Festival Proceeds Despite Nearby Wildfire (americanow.com) — Hawk Fire near northwest Reno is now largely contained after burning over 15,000 acres, destroying dozens of homes, and causing one local fatality, but most evacuation zones have reopened. As firefighters finish mop-up and forest closures remain, Burning Man is still moving forward in the Black Rock Desert, about 120 miles northeast of Reno, with tens of thousands expected to attend.
