Today's riddle: I'm a rock group with 4 members; one member was assassinated. What am I? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. TSA program lets people without tickets past security. Is Reno next? (rgj.com subscription) — Reno-Tahoe International Airport is expected to join TSA's new Gateside program in early October, letting approved non-ticketed visitors go through security to meet travelers or visit shops. Local PreCheck members and other trusted travelers will need to apply online a day or more in advance, follow standard screening rules, and may face daily limits on passes.
2. Vacant downtown building racks up more than $100,000 in fines (mynews4.com) — Reno's long-vacant Sundowner Hotel tower on North Arlington Avenue has already generated $115,000 in city code enforcement fines, with nearly $10,000 still owed as officials push the owners to maintain the property. Residents are split between wanting demolition and hoping the building, compared by some to Carson City's Ormsby House, can be saved as nearby properties are redeveloped.
3. Renown Health Secures Historic $40M Gift from Philanthropist Tom Golisano to Build Northern Nevada's First Standalone Children's Hospital (thenevadaglobe.com) — Renown Health in Reno has secured a record $40 million donation to build Northern Nevada's first standalone children's hospital, replacing its current scattered pediatric setup. The new Reno-based facility will expand intensive care, cancer treatment, and behavioral health services so local families no longer need to travel to California or Utah for complex pediatric care.
4. Reno police officers, dispatchers awarded for response to GSR shooting (rgj.com subscription) — Reno residents are learning how six officers and four dispatchers were honored this week for their response to the 2025 Grand Sierra Resort shooting, including medals of valor and courage. The ceremony highlighted officers' actions under fire and dispatchers' calm coordination, even as the investigation into motive and responsibility in the shooting remains unresolved.
5. UNR or UNLV? Niche says this university is Nevada's No. 1 party school (rgj.com subscription) — Students in Reno may be interested to know that the University of Nevada, Reno was ranked Nevada's top party school and best overall college by Niche, based largely on student surveys. The report also highlights UNR's strong marks in academics, diversity, professors, and student life compared with UNLV and Nevada State University.
