Here are the top stories in Reno today:
- Due to an algae bloom, the City of Reno is advising residents and their pets to avoid all contact with pond waters at Teglia's Paradise Park until further notice. The combined drought-induced low-water condition, high phosphorus levels, and extremely low flow/circulation has created the ideal conditions for a blue-green algae bloom. The algae promotes the growth of a specific class of toxins that creates significant concern for the public's health. (Press Release Desk)
- The City of Reno is offering 300 discounted trees to Reno residents only as part of a program that helps conserve energy and reduce energy bills through strategic tree planting. Residents can reserve one 5-gallon-sized tree for $16.25 per tree, a significant savings from the average retail cost. The program is made possible through ReLEAF Reno and Energy-Saving Trees. The City of Reno's goal, through the ReLEAF Reno program, is to double the city's tree canopy by 2036, from 5.2 percent in 2015 to 10 percent. (KOLO)
- The City of Reno is beginning the process to redraw the boundaries of the city's five wards. The redrawing of boundaries takes place every 10 years after the federal census, when district boundaries for federal, state, and local elected offices are redrawn to reflect new population data and shifting populations. (KTVN)
- The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Reno Resident Office busts an illegal marijuana operation with 60 greenhouses spanning over 22 acres in Gardnerville.(KTVN)
- An all-day standoff between Reno Police and a wanted man ended peacefully Monday night after the armed man reportedly locked himself in a vehicle in northwest Reno and was threatening suicide. (KOLO)
