Here are the top 3 stories today in Reno:
- Last Wednesday, an elderly woman was run over by her own car and killed outside a post office on McCabe Drive in south Reno. Authorities were called to the scene at around 4:00 p.m. after calls were received about a woman down in a parking lot. According to reports, a witness stated that they found the 72-year-old woman lying in the parking lot with severe injuries. Another witness claimed that they saw the Lexus running in reverse and proceeded to take the keys out of the ignition. The elderly woman was taken to the hospital where she later passed away. - This past Wednesday, a vigil was held for 54 homeless people who died in Washoe County last year. This event was coordinated by a coalition of interfaith leaders and housing advocates. It was a significant moment of acknowledgment. The cold weather of the night was brutal to the people attending; however, it was a great way to show people what the homeless have gone through in terms of dealing with the cold weather. The organizers hope that people left with more empathy towards these community members. (KUNR Public Radio)
- The University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) Cybersecurity Center recently received a $3.3 million grant to boost Nevada's workforce. This grant will be used to award scholarships to 23 students majoring in Computer Science and Engineering with a minor in Cybersecurity. However, the students who accept the scholarships are required to return the favor and "work in cybersecurity jobs for federal, state, local or tribal governments in their chosen cybersecurity field for the duration equal to the years of scholarship they receive."
