Here are the top three stories today in Reno:

  1. According to new data, employment rates in Reno are at an all-time high. As the state continues to recover from the COVID pandemic, Nevada added 5,400 jobs in the past month. Reno's employment increased by 1,300 jobs (0.5 percent) since February and increased by 10,700 jobs (4.4 percent) since March 2021. (Carson Now)
  2. The City of Reno and ReLEAF Reno are teaming up to host an Earth Day celebration at Liston Park on Apr. 22 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Organizers for the low-waste event are asking volunteers and attendees to bring their own water bottles to the event. The celebration will include the planting of two trees that have been donated by the nonprofit, ImpactNV. "A collaborative tree-planting project is a visible example of our investment in our communities. It will help address our urban heat island and create a new way for law enforcement to get out of their patrol cars and into our communities in a very positive way," Reno City Councilmember Naomi Duerr said. 3. A Reno man who was convicted of torturing and killing multiple dogs in 2015 is seeking an early release from prison. Jason Brown has served less than eight years of a maximum 28-year prison sentence after pleading no contest to killing and torturing seven dogs he got off of Craigslist in 2015. Brown is urging the parole board to release him after authorities determined he'd been misclassified as a violent offender. On Monday, authorities stated that Brown still presents a risk to the community. A decision is expected on May 16. (KRNV)
