Here are the top stories today in Reno:
- In the United States, over 75% of formerly incarcerated people return to the system within five years of release. Elaine Voigt wants to change that by offering her help to thousands of formerly incarcerated people in Northern Nevada. Voigt is the founder of My Journey Home, a non-profit that helps families and loved ones adjust to their new reality. It also facilitates reintegration for ex-felons back into the community. Voigt helps them from the moment they return home -- from setting up employment to rehabilitation. (News 4)
- According to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, deputies pulled over a vehicle on Friday, Dec. 3 after noticing that the driver was passing other cars on the right, using the merging lane instead of a normal traffic lane near the Golden Valley exit. A K9 team was brought in after deputies noticed both people in the vehicle behaving oddly. During a probable cause search, deputies found fentanyl pills, heroin, methamphetamine, filled hypodermic needles, and other drug paraphernalia. After booking the pair into the Washoe County Jail, it was discovered that the driver had given deputies a fake identity. (KOLO)
- Christmas decorations are going up in homes all over the area, but if you have a real Christmas tree there are some things to keep in mind. There are a few tips Reno Fire Department wants people to know as you deck the halls this holiday season. You'll want to choose a tree with green fresh needles that don't fall when touched. Make sure to add water daily to the tree to prevent drying out. Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed. (KOLO)
