New Art Sculpture Coming To Reno’s Midtown

The City of Reno will install artist Hunter Brown’s large-scale steel sculpture in Midtown on Monday, November 9, 2020. The sculpture will be installed in the roundabout at South Virginia, Mary Street, and Center Street beginning at 10 a.m. The public should expect road closures in the area from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The sculpture, titled Reciprocity, was selected by the Public Art Committee and Reno Arts & Culture Commission in conjunction with an in-depth public engagement process with the Midtown community. Through a series of public meetings, the business owners, residents, and stakeholders participated in discussion and met with the finalists to help select this iconic art piece.

Brown, the artist behind Innovative Sculpture Design, is based in Little Rock, Arkansas and has created a variety of monumental sculptures for corporate and public art settings. His abstract work emphasizes movement, and his designs have a gravity-defying quality to them.

The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) installed a footing for the sculpture as part of their Virginia Street Project, which included pedestrian safety and accessibility improvements, trees, and enhanced transit service. RTC is also working with the City to install artistic bike racks and benches in the area.

This public art project was made possible in part by an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
