Here are the top stories in Reno today:
- Reno air quality drops due to smoke from wildfires burning near Sequoia National Forest. The two fires, located approximately 210 and 250 miles south of Reno, are growing in size and winds are blowing the smoke up north towards Reno. According to WCHD, the county has endured 63 days affected by wildfire smoke, including Friday. That breaks the previous record of 59 days in 2020. (Reno Gazette Journal)
- The Washoe County Regional Transportation Commission announced this week that the Transportation Security Administration can now assess penalties against those who refuse to wear masks on buses. Beginning on Sept. 17, the penalty for refusing to wear a mask on transit vehicles will increase to a range of $500 to $1000 for first offenders. Penalties for second offenses will range from $1000 to $3000. (ThisisReno)
- As a safety precaution, the Cargo Concert Hall in Downtown Reno will require either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test result within the last 72 hours from concertgoers and masks must also be worn regardless of vaccination status. (Reno Gazette Journal)
- Two University of Nevada, Reno faculty have been named Early Educators of the Year by the Nevada Department of Education for their work in childhood education in the College of Education & Human Development. (Nevada Today)
- The UNR Ski Swap returns Oct. 1-3 to the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, showcasing new and gently used skis, snowboards, boots, and winter outerwear. (KTVN)
