Here are the top three stories in Reno today:
- The Washoe County Sheriff's Office is investigating a shooting in Olinghouse. According to authorities, officers responded to reports of a shooting at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Officers were unable to find a victim when they first arrived on the scene and there was little information regarding a suspect. After nearly an hour, officers made contact with the victim, who refused medical treatment. Officers are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call their anonymous tips hotline. (Press Release Desk)
- Reno hit 30,000 manufacturing jobs last month. According to data released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training, and Rehabilitation, 800 new jobs were created in Reno in April, which pushed manufacturing job counts to the 30,000 mark. Jobless rates in Nevada as a whole remain high, with May's unemployment rate sitting at 4.9 percent. There is reason to be hopeful, though, as state officials say the latest figures show that Nevada's job growth rate is "the fastest in the nation." (This Is Reno)
- The Washoe County School Board has opted to only renovate part of the old Hug High building. The district's choice to cut back was prompted by inflation drastically increasing construction costs. While the board previously approved $112 million for renovations, inflation has caused the estimated costs to raise $35 million above what was previously budgeted. Because of the decision, students will be unable to move into the renovated building until at least August 2025. (KRNV)
