🌱 Vaccination Requirements Change + In-Person Classes Resume

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Reno.

Happy Tuesday, Reno! Here's everything you need to know about what's happening locallytoday.

First, today's weather:

Sunny and cooler. High: 45 Low: 20.

Here are the top 3 stories today in Reno:

  1. The city manager of Reno, Doug Thornley, told staff last week that the city is going to back off of the plan that requires city employees to get the COVID-19 vaccine. According to the new plan, the city is still going to require new employees to provide proof of vaccination; however, current employees will not have to follow that mandate. Along with all of these updates, masks are still required for both groups. (KRNV My News 4)
  2. The University of Nevada in Reno (UNR) has started its spring semester and is continuing with in-person classes. With everyone beginning their second week of courses, the administration has faced some issues. Many of the faculty members have expressed their concern with in-person classes. They have even started a petition. For now, nothing about the protocols at UNR has changed. (KOLO)
  3. The omicron variant of the coronavirus has hit many restaurants in the Reno-Sparks area. Because of this, many restaurants have been temporarily closed due to staffing shortages. Restaurants that can afford to stay open have opted to adjust their work hours to accommodate for missing staff. (FoxReno.com)

From our sponsor:

Last week, we told you about our new favorite non-alcoholic go-to — the refreshingly bitter drinks from our partners at Betera. They're chef-created from natural botanicals, lightly effervescent and worthy of life beyond "Dry January." We mentioned that their Ginger-Orange was excellent; we've since tried Elderflower-Lime and loved it as well — light and floral with the perfect amount of zing. We're converts.

Enough of you took Betera up on their 15% discount on first orders for Patch Daily readers that they've extended the offer for another week. Use PATCH15 at checkout. Highly recommended — try Betera here.

Today in Reno:

  • GSA Blood Drive at Joe Crowley Student Union (11:30 AM)
  • GHOST & Volbeat at Reno Events Center (7:00 PM)
  • Jesse Cook Live at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts (8:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • The Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is going BIG for Beer Can Appreciation Day. They are showcasing their Big Little Thing Imperial IPA. It has a full malt body and restrained sweetness. It also contains many tropical hop flavors such as mango, grapefruit, and tangerine. Get yours today! (Instagram)
  • The SPCA of Northern Nevada is super happy to congratulate Maverick on finding his forever home! He now has two loving "paw-rents" to give him the life he deserves. Make sure to go check out their post for the cutest update picture! (Facebook)
  • The Lost Dogs, Cats & Pets of Reno is asking for everyone's help in spreading the word about Boba! Boba was lost on Jan. 22 near Katherine Dunn elementary school. She is described as a German Shepherd with black fur. Anyone with information is asked to contact them. (Facebook)
