Altercation In Peterborough Leaves 1 Man Dead, Off-Duty Cop With Stab Wounds, NH AG’s Office Says
Jack Hutchings was found dead Sunday due to apparent gunshot wounds after an incident between neighbors; self-defense is eyed in the case.
CONCORD, NH — New Hampshire State Police are investigating an untimely death incident after a man died due to apparent gunshot wounds and an off-duty Peterborough police officer endured stab wounds, after a dispute between neighbors on Sunday night.
Limited information is available about the case, which occurred around 8 p.m. on July 6.
According to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, two neighbors were involved in an altercation outside their homes on Grove Street in Peterborough. Officers who responded to the incident found Jack Hutchings, 24, of Peterborough, dead at the scene, “with apparent gunshot wounds,” Michael Garrity, the director of communications for the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, said Monday. Another man, an off-duty Peterborough police officer, was found suffering from “apparent stab/incised wounds.”

The officer is still hospitalized, he said.
An autopsy was performed on Hutchings, but the cause and manner of death are not being released pending next of kin notification.

“The investigation is active and ongoing and includes whether the person who appeared to have shot Mr. Hutchings acted in self-defense,” Garrity said.
