Hiker Dies On Mt. Washington: Samaritans Tried CPR For 40 Minutes
The hiker collapsed along the Jewell Trail over the weekend. The person was not immediately identified.
RANDOLPH, NH — A hiker died on Mt. Washington over the weekend, despite the efforts of fellow hikers to resuscitate the man.
The hiker collapsed just after 1 p.m. Saturday along the Jewell Trail near the summit, according to New Hampshire Fish & Game. Hikers passing by stopped and performed CPR on the man for about 40 minutes, but had to stop as weather conditions worsened near the summit.
"The good Samaritan hikers performed CPR for 40 minutes, but with no signs of life and with freezing temperature and high winds, resuscitation efforts were ceased. Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and Pemi Valley Search and Rescue members carried the body nearly a mile across the Gulfside Trail to the Cog Railway where he was placed in the train and transported to the base," Fish & Game said in a Monday news release.

The man was hiking with his dog, which was not hurt and was taken to an animal shelter. Officials did not release the man's identity Monday morning pending notification of his family.
This is the second death near Mt. Washington in recent months. Xi Chen, 53, of Andover, Mass., died in late June after he was overcome by freezing temperatures and severe weather along the Gulfside Trail.
