AMHERST, NH — Amherst firefighters and emergency medical personnel are mourning the loss of one of their own during the weekend.

James Lockwood, a firefighter and EMT with the town for more than three decades, died on Saturday, according to Chief Matthew Conley.

Lockwood suffered a medical emergency at his home. Fire and rescue teams were sent to assist but he died later at a local hospital.

“Immediate resuscitation efforts, as well as advanced life support medical care, was provided,” Conley said, “while FF/A-EMT Lockwood was transported to (the) hospital. Unfortunately, the exceptional efforts were not able to revive Jim and he passed away at the hospital.”

Lockwood was one of the longest members of the force, having served at Amherst Fire Rescue since 1990. He worked both as a firefighter and paramedic. Lockwood was assigned to Engine 3 and, Conley noted, just last week was seen driving the fire engine during the Amherst July 4 celebration.
