Amherst Roofer Fined For Taking Money, Not Doing Work: NH AG
Alert: Tyler Thomson, the owner of Amherst Roofing, has agreed to pay back more than $13K in deposits he took while failing to perform work.

AMHERST, NH — A local contractor has agreed to court-ordered restitutions after taking deposits last year and then failing to perform the work, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office. The NH AG issued a consumer protection action for unfair and deceptive trade practices against Tyler Thomson, the owner of Amherst Roofing of Amherst. Gregory Albert, an assistant attorney general, stated that Thomson took $13,117 in deposits from customers for various roofing projects but then failed to perform the work or refund the deposits.
Numerous complaints against Amherst Roofing were investigated between November 2018 and January 2019.
“Mr. Thomson entered into a consent judgment to resolve these allegations,” Albert stated. “Under the terms of the consent judgment, Mr. Thomson is prohibited from accepting any deposits or prepayments related to his roofing business for 10 years. Materials for contracted work must be purchased directly by the consumer and will be considered the property of the consumer.”

The agreement was reached in Merrimack County Superior Court on April 19, 2019. Thomson is also required to pay customers back the deposits he accepted. After payments have been fulfilled, he will also be required to pay the state a $500 fine.
“Consumers are reminded that home contractors in New Hampshire are not required to be licensed by the state and that consumers should exercise due diligence before entering into contracts, especially those that require pre-work deposits,” Albert added.
