AMS Geography Bee Winners

Liz Purvis and Nicholetta Hitt took the top spots with their geographic knowledge.

An AMS student could be on her way to a state-level competition for her top-notch geography skills.

A total 39 middle school students competed in the 2012 Annual Geography Bee Finals at the Amherst Middle School on Friday. One student, seventh-grader Liz Purvis, took first place in the school wide geography bee.

Fifth-grade student Nicholetta Hitt was the runner-up for this year's competition.

Purvis will now take a written qualifying test, which will be submitted to the National Geography Society for scoring. If she receives a top score on her exam, the bright young student will be invited to attend the New Hampshire state level competition, which will be held on across all states on Friday, March 30.

It must be in the family because Purvis' younger sister, Michaela Purvis, won the Wilkins School Geography Bee this year.

Approximately 100 students will be competing at the state level competition.

The National Geography Bee from National Geographic will be the next step for state winners, which will take place from May 22-24.
