Ben Reams Is A Spelling Champ!

The eighth-grade student took the top spot at the Amherst Spelling Bee.

We have a winner!

Eighth grader Ben Reams is now the 2012 AMS Spelling Bee Champion after a drawn-out spelling battle on Monday.

Reams endured 14 "nail-biting rounds" and finally clinched the victory after correctly spelling the championship word, "commodore."

The Bee officials even had to dip into the “Additional Words” list after exhausting the 125 words on the 2012 School Spelling Bee list.

Reams went head-to-head against seventh grader Anwen Su for three rounds before securing his win.

He now moves on to the Regional meet, the date and time to be announced soon.

Thirteen students competed in the School Bee after winning their classroom bees as well as qualifying in grade-level semi-finals:

Grade five:   Ben LaFlamme, Seth Facey, Alana Hoskins, Nicholetta Hitt
Grade six:   Danielle Fiebke, Jack Reams, Anthony Cavallaro
Grade seven:   Anwen Su, Camden Patt, Madeleine Hunt
Grade eight:   Jeff Johansen, August Darula and Ben Reams
