Monadnock Music Presents Schubert's song cycle "Winterreise"

[Peterborough, N.H.] Guest
artists, Sanford Sylvan and David Breitman, perform Schubert's song
cycle “Winterreise” on Saturday,
August 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peterborough Town House, 1 Grove Street in
Peterborough, New Hampshire.

Written in 1828, “Winterreise”
(Winter Journey) features a setting of 24 poems written by the 19th-century
German poet Wilhelm Müller. “Winterreise” is a story of lost or unrequited love
and follows a disappointed lover as he takes his leave of the village where his
hopes for marriage and happiness have been dashed. He trudges into the winter
countryside, his despair leading him inexorably to a bitter end. Schubert
seized upon the wanderer’s chill journey from the fading village lights to the utter
darkness of his icy death, lifting the poetry with brilliant musical
commentary, both in the vocal lines and in the piano’s personal drama. David
Breitman performs the fortepiano, an earlier version of the piano used from
1700 through the early 19th century.
