King said the lacrosse team organized a breast cancer fundraiser last year in honor of their coach Maren Petropulos, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has also hosted a fundraising event at TGI Fridays and is selling bracelets.
Her goal for the project was to raise $10,000, but has only raised about $2,000 so far. Over 100 people are expected to join the walk/run and show their support in fighting cancer.
King said that she hopes her efforts will continue to raise awareness of this life-threatening disease. A total of 12.38 percent of women born today will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast at some time during their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute.
