Local Scholarships Available For Souhegan Students

All applications are due by April 2, 2012.

The Souhegan Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce that its applications are posted for the 2012 scholarship year.

College scholarships are available to any high school student from Amherst or Mont Vernon, regardless of school attended, including home-schooled students.

Since 2004, the SSF has given more than $73,000 to local high school students.

Looking to donate to help the Souhegan Scholarship Foundation? All donations to worthy students are tax-deductible. 

The following scholarships are up for grabs this year:

SSF Math, Science and Engineering Scholarship: Awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in math, science or engineering.

SSF Arts Scholarship: Awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in the Arts (for example visual arts, dance, drama, music, architecture, creative writing).

SSF Vocational Scholarship: Awarded to a student pursuing a career in a trade, technical or service-related field (for example, automotive, cosmetology, hospitality, childcare).

SSF Scholarship for the Liberal Arts/Undeclared: Awarded to a student pursuing a college degree in Liberal Arts or an undeclared major. 

Joyce Kenne Memorial Scholarship: In memory of Joyce Kenne, who was an inspirational librarian at AMS from 1974-1994.  Awarded to a student pursuing a career in library science, English, teaching, languages, journalism or the humanities.

Kimberly Cates Memorial Scholarship Fund: To inspire young people to follow their passion for caring for others and to support them as they begin their post-secondary studies in the field of medicine. Please visit the

Linda J. Merrill Memorial Scholarship: In memory of Linda J. Merrill, the first registrar of SHS, who was dedicated to encouraging, supporting and inspiring SHS students to achieve their highest potential. Awarded to a student who has overcome difficult circumstances and continues to demonstrate the ability to perform academically and in the community. 

Robert Quay Memorial ScholarshipIn memory of Robert Quay, a 1995 graduate of SHS who embodied the “Souhegan Six” and provided outstanding leadership to the school community.  Awarded to an environmentally conscious student who has been actively involved in community services and who demonstrates strong leadership skills.

Gail Westergren Memorial Scholarship: In memory of Gail Westergren, who was the principal of the Mont Vernon Village School and who dedicated her life to encouraging and supporting the welfare and growth of her students. Awarded to a Mont Vernon resident who plans to pursue a career in education or work with children.

All applications are due by April 2, 2012. Scholarships are announced in late May. Please visit their website, www.souheganscholarshipfoundation.org, for more information.
