Man Arrested After Allegedly Waving a Hatchet During a Road Rage Incident

Matthew Merrill of Amherst was arrested on Continental Drive in Merrimack last night.

A local man was arrested in a road rage incident last night, allegedly waving a hatchet at a a man and threatening to kill him, according to police.

Matthew Merrill, 24, of Cub Circle in Amherst, was arrested at around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 4, on a criminal threatening felony charge.

According to a police report, officers were sent to Continental Boulevard for a report of a road rage incident. A 911 caller stated that a vehicle in a parking lot almost struck a woman and he went to speak to the person driving the vehicle. The driver, Merrill, allegedly threatened to shoot the man and began waving a hatchet at him, according to police, and left the scene.

The man then went to his own car and followed Merrill while on the phone with police.

Police caught up with Merrill at Continental near Cambridge Drive and after speaking with Merrill, arrested him.

He was released on $500 cash bail and personal recognizance bail. He’s due in Merrimack District Court on Aug. 7.
