Never Too Late To Learn Something New
Souhegan High is hosting a series of adult enrichment courses to learn useful (and fun) skills.

Souhegan High School wants you to have some fun this winter.
The school will begin its Winter 2012 Evening Enrichment Courses & Workshops next week, where interested locals can learn everything from yoga to conversational Italian.

The courses will be filled with the first registered and payments before the first class will secure your seat. The cost of the course is based on the number of weeks the course meets and residence in the SHS School District.

Monday
Yoga: Moving Into Peace
Teacher: John Silva
Dates: Monday, January 23, 30, February 6, 13, 20, March 5
Times: 7:00 – 8:30-pm
Cost: $70.00 for residents, $80.00 for non-residents
We will focus primarily on yoga postures and breath work, with some seated meditation and occasional free-form movement. Each week we will emphasize one or two postures in detail. We will empower body, mind, and spirit toward peace. Each class will last 90 minutes, the last part of which will be a relaxation period. This course is appropriate for all levels of experience, especially beginners. Participants should bring a yoga mat or large towel, a cushion or yoga wedge, and throw or blanket for relaxation.

Cost: $100.00 for residents, $110.00 for non-residents plus a lab fee for ingredients. Enrollment limited to 12 students.
Learn new techniques and dishes - everyone should be able to rustle up some delicious meals. There's something here for everyone, experienced or not. The focus will be on making seasonal dinners, with dishes like Potato-Leek Soup, Pork Medallions with Creamy Caper Sauce, Chicken Fricassée, Ham & Broccoli Crêpes, Steak with Red Wine-Shallot Sauce, Potato Gratin, Milanese Risotto, Braised Red Cabbage, and desserts like Apple Clafoutis or Roasted Pears. Recipes are provided.

Join Kevin Dadoly as he instructs this popular studio course designed to enhance and challenge all levels of watercolor artists from the beginner to the exhibiting artist! Expect to explore all types of painting techniques, and subject matter, in an enjoyable and positive environment.
Fly Tying for Advanced Beginner/Intermediate
Teacher: Peggy Brenner

A hands on course taking us from the Beginner class or some basic experience to the next level, a combination of freshwater, saltwater and a salmon fly.
By the end of six weeks we will have constructed 12 patterns, starting where we left off in the Beginner class, perfecting technique and building flies in increasing complexity. By week six each student will have a fly selection that can be used anywhere or enjoyed as an art form.
The instructor will supply tools and vises for use in class, along with all materials and instruction for each fly.
Peggy Brenner has been teaching fly tying for the past 8 years at United Fly Tyers, Casting for Recovery and International Women’s Fly Fishing. She is a demonstration tyer at the major fly fishing shows around the country, in the American Fly Fishing Museum display “A Graceful Rise” ladies throughout the centuries of fly fishing.. And, the current apprentice in the NH Arts Council Traditional Arts Program – salmon flies and their construction mentored by Larry Antonuk of Keene, NH..
Deed and Probate Research for Genealogy & House History

Has your family history hit a brick wall? Try searching deeds to find that long lost g-g-grandparent. Jackie Marshall presents a class on researching deeds for the family genealogist. We'll use Hillsborough County, New Hampshire in our examples and also examine ways to search deeds long distance. This is also a great class if you want to research your own house history.
Make your own Dairy Products at Home

This class will cover the dairy processes our great grandmothers all knew. It’s not hard to make your own dairy products - but the information has been lost over the past few generations. You will learn how to handle and process un-pasteurized milk to make sweet-cream butter, cultured butter, buttermilk, sour cream, yogurt, Greek yogurt, whey, mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, feta, farmers cheese and clabber.
Stained Glass Window Panels

Come explore the various shapes and sizes of window stained glass panels. Make one for your home or for a friend's home. We will be doing different shapes - circle, oval, rectangle or a funky shape! This class is for all levels. Please note there will not be supplies - each student will need their own supplies and glass. I will provide the grinding machine and frame machine.
Susanna Ries has been creating original stained glass for 21 years. Her passion for glass began when she took classes at Renaissance Glassworks in Nashua NH. She has been showing her artwork at two local galleries, East Colony Fine Art in Manchester and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen Store in Concord. Susanna’s background is in Fine Art - she earned a BA Degree in Art from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, New Hampshire.

Beginning Hoopdance

We're trying something different! This is a hybrid class for new and returning hoopers. The first 1/2 hour is dedicated to new students who'd like to learn basic hooping (hip hooping, halos, passing, etc.) and to practice their skills. At 6:45 the "experienced" hoopers will join the class and I'll teach some of the more advanced moves (thigh hooping, double corkscrews, etc.). There will be 1 1/2 hours allotted for each group to practice, laugh, and learn. If you are new to hooping or want to get better at the techniques you know, come on out and share the fun. It's a great way to beat the winter blahs!
T-shirt Quilt: Preserve those Memories!

Are your bureau drawers, closets, and storage boxes filled with your favorite T-shirts from school, sports, camp, vacations, concerts, etc. that you just can't part with? Come to this T-Shirt Quilt class and learn how to turn these treasures into a warm, comfy, quilt that will be great for curling up with on a cold winter night. This class will focus on making the quilt top only. If there is enough interest a second class will be offered, to teach you how to quilt this T-shirt treasure, or you will be given information on how to have this quilt finished by a professional quilter.
You will need a portable sewing machine in good working order, basic sewing supplies, and approximately 1 dozen t-shirts. This number is somewhat flexible. This, along with other fabric requirements, tools, and supplies will be discussed at the first class. Some sewing experience will be helpful, but not necessarily quilting experience.

Gluten Free Baking & Cooking with Oonagh
Teacher: Oonagh Williams

Lab fee to be determined by the chosen menu
Join Chef Oonagh for a gluten free cooking/baking class. Since the kitchen at Souhegan is not a gluten free facility, Chef Oonagh will bring her own equipment and all the ingredients. In the first class the participants will decide on the recipes for the series: previous recipes have included gluten free pumpkin roll, English hobnob cookies, various chocolate cookies, chicken marsala, beef stroganoff and chicken soup. Students will eat all the dishes prepared in the class.
British born, Independent, Award Winning, Chef Ooangh has a culinary arts degree and trained in London and Switzerland. Chef Oonagh gives presentations and classes on gluten free cooking and living, consults and guides people in adapting to a gluten free lifestyle, caters gluten free dinner parties and is finalizing a gluten free cookbook.
Pottery Studio

6 Weeks of studio experience creating with clay. Pinch, coil, and slab construction as well as wheel throwing. Decorative glaze and texturing techniques will be explored.

Colorful Copper, Whimsical Wire
Teacher: Karen Mitchell

Copper comes in many forms, like wire in multitude of colors and sheet as thin as foil. Using simple tools, we will cut and bend, hammer and stamp, twist, coil knit and crochet our way to fun and funky jewelry. We will add color with colored copper wire with heat and with resin inlay. We’ll use pebbles beads and our imaginations. It is easier than you think!

Thinking about chickens to get fresh eggs? This three class course will cover all you need to know to set up your own flock. Topics will cover types of chickens, shelter, feed and all the joys of owning your own chickens.
Julie is the owner of Julie’s Happy Hens in Mont Vernon. She raises over 400 chickens and sells her free range eggs to the local community.
Crazy Quilting and Hand Embroidery Class
Teacher: Joan Poltack
Dates: Thursday, January 26, February 2, 9, 16, 23, March 8

Explore your creativity while learning crazy quilt techniques and a variety of hand stitches for embellishment. Starting with fabric selection and piecing techniques, we will create the fabric base, either by hand or sewing machine. Your results can be modern or traditional. You will learn a variety of decorative embroidery stitches and silk ribbon embroidery, and can go as “crazy” with this as you wish! The final project may be a case for cell phone, iPad, ebook reader, sunglasses, or whatever you like. Fabrics will be provided. Bringing your own sewing machine is optional.
Joan Poltack has a degree in Design from UCLA and several decades of sewing experience.
Advanced Conversational Italian

This course will build a stronger skill set to converse in Italian and teach a deeper insight of the grammatical concepts of the language. Participants should have a strong basic knowledge of the Italian language to build upon.
Lesson content will cover cultural notes, dialogues and grammar concepts of the course book and is required for this course. Italian A Self-Teaching Guide by Edoardo Lebano ISBN 0-471-35961-0. Other course materials will be supplied in addition by course instructor.
Zumba – Ditch the Workout…Join the Party!!

So what’s Zumba? It’s both Latin-inspired dance-fitness and a world-wide sensation; but mostly it’s an hour of fantastic music, addictive rhythms and a time to dance for the sheer joy of it! Cammie’s class is low impact and the intensity is totally up to you. Students love Cammie’s smile, her enthusiasm and her “real body” type so drop your cares at the door and join the fun!
What to wear/bring: Stretchy comfortable clothes that move with you and sneakers. Court shoes and cross trainers are preferable to running shoes (since these are designed for forward motion only). Remember your water bottle!
