NH Average Median Household Income Takes Major Leap Forward: Census Data

The average median household income in 2015 was well above the national average.

New Hampshire's average median household income increase from 2014 to 2015 was among the highest in the country, according to U.S. Census data released Thursday. Annual census data shows that in New Hampshire, like the rest of the country, median household incomes have grown overall.

In New Hampshire, the median household income for 2015 was $70,303, compared to $66,557 in 2014, the American Community Survey data shows. The 5.6 percent increase was one of the highest in the United States; The country's average change was a 3.8 percent increase. Only Montana, Oregon, and Tennessee increased by a higher percentage.

Nationwide, the 2015 number for median household income was $55,775.

"Median" means the majority of people are making at or around that much; it represents a helpful middle point. The household income includes the householder and all others within that 15 or older, whether or not that person is a relative of the householder.

Other states in New England: Connecticut, $71,346; Massachusetts, $70,628; Rhode Island, $58,073; Vermont, $56,990; and Maine, $51,594.
