Should NH Voters Have To Show ID?

The NH House will vote on the voter ID bill next week.

New Hampshire residents may need their ID at both the liquor store and the voting booth.

Senate Bill 289 would require a voter present a valid photo identification to vote in person, but voters without photo identification may execute a challenged voter affidavit. Voters who do not present a valid photo identification shall be mailed and instructed to return an identity verification letter.

Republicans have pushed harder for the proposed reform after the James O’Keefe controversial at New Hampshire polling sites in January. Critics, including the League of Women Voters, say the bill is an unnecessary measure that will deter certain minority constituencies from voting.

The Union Leader reports that a proposed amendment would implement the new rules into the November presidential elections, but officials say the changes would be impossible to implement in that time.

The House will vote on the measure next week.
