Town Departments Want New Software

Amherst's Finance and Tax Collector Departments are looking at future updates in their computer software.

Two town departments are seeking updated software to increase efficiency and prepare for the future.

Finance Director Merri Howe said that her department’s accounting software, Crystal Reports Version 8,  is over 10 years old.

Howe said in her report that the software is showing signs of conflict with newer operating systems. She said it would be in the best interest of the town to look for more modern software that is efficient, diversified and interactive.

Moving to new software will take some time and Howe said she wouldn’t expect an upgrade until FY 14 at the earliest.

It would not be cheap either, costing $50,000 to 60,000 or more to implement new software. She said she will consult with other communities similar to Amherst in order to see what software they use and how much they spent.

Howe said that many financial issues have become more complex and the department could use a human resource employee. She suggested the possibility of taking her assistant position and making it full-time with HR responsibilities.

Tax Collector Gail P. Stout said that her office wants to explore alternative payment methods for taxpayers.

She said that residents are morel likely to use electronic methods of payment. Implementing debit cards and electronic checks comes with costs however, which could be covered with a convenience fee for those using them for payment.

The financial software would have to be updated to handle these new options, but Stout said it would better the quality of service from her department.
