UPDATE: Town Hall Closed Due to Structural Problems

Repairs are currently being done on the Amherst Town Hall after major issues were found in the building's structure.

The decision came after engineer and designer Glenn Dodge of Dodgeco compared pictures of a part of the building scheduled to be repaired, and found that the issue needed to be addressed immediately. The Board of Selectmen decided to close off the building to the public after an emergency meeting on Monday.

Chairman Bruce Bowler said that there is no immediate danger, but the building had to be closed to allow repairs to be made. Town employees were given the option to work from home or remain in the building as repairs are made.

The work is focused on the structural beams.

The building is expected to be closed until at least Friday, but may open as soon as Thursday. The selectmen meeting scheduled for Tuesday night is rescheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m., and will most likely be in the EMS building if Town Hall is not ready in time.

The building, built in 1825, was already scheduled to be repaired due to a rotting roof support system. But on Monday, selectmen decided town hall needed to be shut down immediately to shore up supports from the basement to the second floor.
