Republican candidate Fred Karger answered Patch's questions on hot issues Friday night at The Draft in Concord.

The openly-gay Republican candidate sat down with NH Patch editors to talk about everything from spending cuts to banning Florida-made orange juice.
A fiscal conservative, Karger believes that his party has moved too far right on social issues and feels disillusioned with the current crop of candidates.

“The Republican Party I grew up with was not hung up on social issues,” said Karger. “The Republican party I grew up with was welcoming and opening.”
He said he would rather spend time and energy working on the economy by cutting spending across the board.

While he would like America to be a national presence and fight for what is right, he believes the country needs to end the wars it is currently in.
When asked about the , he said that his heart went out to the demonstrators and their frustration with the status quo.
“I’m all for capitalism, I am all for demonstrations, as long as they are both done lawfully and legally,” said Karger.
He lamented being pushed out of recent debates that he said he should have been qualified for, such as the .
Karger sees somebody like as a model for a lesser-known candidate to grab the national spotlight with a message. He said he relates to Cain’s humor and sees room for new ideas to be presented.
When it comes to immigration, Karger believes that the other candidates showed little respect for immigrants in the last debate.
“Immigrant bashing at that last debate, I was so offended. What are they doing to this country, what are they doing to the Republican Party,” said Karger. “I was truly embarrassed by Republican candidates in the last debate.”
