Zumba At Souhegan High!

The school district has joined forces with Hampshire Hills to bring the dance workouts to students.

There has been a bit more movin’ and groovin’ at Souhegan High School since Zumba has come to town.

The SAU Wellness Committee joined forces with Hampshire Hills to offer Zumba Fitness classes at SHS from 2:15-3:00pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired dance-fitness program that blends “red-hot” international music.

The program began on March. 20 and runs for 10 weeks. There are no classes during spring recess.

This program runs in the new Wellness space located at Souhegan High School. Students or adults can pay $2 when they arrive at any class. Wear sneakers and comfortable clothing, but also don’t forget your water!

Danielle Collins, Chair of the SAU #39 Wellness Committee, said that the students have a very dynamic instructor, Roque da Silva, who will have students “dancing up a storm.” Roque has promised to go at an appropriate pace to gather enthusiasm and enjoyment for all participants.

"It has taken off like crazy," said Collins. "The kids are loving it and they really enjoy it."

The interest in the program has also been high, with over 24 participants in the latest class and even more looking to join.

She said that these programs are all part of our campaign to get staff, teachers and students more active by offering fun programming.

Collins is also conducting a survey with Clark-Wilkins Elementary School principal Gerry St. Amand to see what activities they would like to see at the schools. Amherst Middle School will be surveyed afterwards.
