BROOKLINE, NH – When Girl Scouts at Captain Samuel Douglas Academy elementary school noticed that their gaga ball pit had fallen into disrepair, they decided to take action. The troop built and painted a new pit, earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award in the process. The Bronze Award is available to Girl Scouts in grades 4 and 5 and is the highest honor girls that age are eligible to earn.
When discussing the project, the troop said “We wanted to make a sturdy gaga ball pit that could be used by our current and future classmates. We worked with our school principal to get approval for the project after we talked and planned as a troop. With his guidance, we were able to find appropriate dimensions and project specifications on the internet. Dan (Lapierre) helped us on build day by supporting us and helping us use all tools safely. We then got to paint and decorate our project as a troop. Our classmates LOVE playing in the gaga ball pit at recess!”
The troop used a $200 council Take Action Mini Grant and Girl Scout Cookie proceeds to fund the pit. Take Action Mini grants are provided by the council for projects like this and are made possible by individual donors.
The troop members who participated in the project were Carly Murphy, Elizabeth Huggins, Camryn Lapierre, Kinsley Brown, Zoey Woolrich, Evellyn Austin, and Amelia Frost, with leaders Joellen Huggins and Lisbeth Murphy. Daniel Lapierre of Lapierre Renovations was the project advisor.
The troop members said they really came together to make a project happen, learning vital life skills. “We had to be respectful of each other's opinions and ideas while still moving the project forward. We were collaborative and took turns participating in all the important parts of the project. It was also so cool to be able to stand in front of the whole school as a troop and share our work. Our Bronze Award allowed us to showcase how special Girl Scouts is to our classmates, teachers, and school community.”
Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains is proud of these ambitious Girl Scouts who saw a need in their community and took action to make a lasting change for the better. See more about Girl Scouts at www.girlscoutsgwm.org.

We are Girl Scouts of the USA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building girls of courage, confidence, and character.
Girl Scouts discover who they are, tap into the power inside them, and build the confidence to let it shine. Through programs from coast to coast and overseas, girls of all backgrounds and abilities come as they are to explore their passions, meet new challenges, and develop hands-on skills. They find their strengths in science labs and on hiking trails, at cookie booths and in front of city councils. Backed by millions of alums and a network of dedicated adult volunteers and mentors, Girl Scouts drive change to make the world a better place. Along the way, they uncover the tools they need to lead with joy, on their own terms. Join us, volunteer, reconnect, or donate.
