Boscawen’s Krystal Vike named Girl Scout Volunteer of the Month

BOSCAWEN, NH – Each fall, many new Girl Scout troops form for the coming year, which means adults take the opportunity to volunteer as leaders and helpers. They get to spend meaningful time with their children and mentor their growth in the Girl Scout program. Krystal Vike joined last year as a helper and it wasn't long before her enthusiasm for Girl Scouts led to her becoming the leader of Troop 63298. For her outstanding service, she has been named the Volunteer of the Month for September by Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, the council serving New Hampshire and Vermont.

Vike, 37, of Boscawen, has a small troop, just four Brownies in grades 2 and 3. She'd love to have more girls join them.

"That would be so exciting!" she said.

Vike had a great mentor in Sheena Corbett of Loudon, who helped get the troop started. Corbett said Vike went from having no Girl Scout experience to helping plan all of the activities, recruiting new members, becoming a co-leader, and enjoying a successful first year of Girl Scout Cookie sales to fund her troop's goals.

"She's so eager to make sure that all the girls in the troop feel seen and that they enjoy what they are doing," Corbett said. "She is open to feedback and happy to ask for guidance and, when the time came to let her new troop do their own thing, they took off running. I'm excited to see what this year holds for them!"

Vike has been brainstorming ideas for the coming year, which include becoming more involved in the community, eventually taking a trip to Great Wolf Lodge, earning badges, learning more about finance through the cookie program, visiting the fire department, and getting guest speakers. She may also share her skills as an electrician.

"That's one of the things I love about Girl Scouts," she said. "I'm learning everything about it too. This is just my second year, but it's the empowerment."
