Bedford, NH 7th Grader Named Top 10 Finalist in SCOTTIES National Trees Rock Video Contest
School Eligible to Win $10,000 in Prize Money for Sustainable Project

Scotties, a leader in the tissue industry is pleased to announce the top 10 entries in their Trees Rock® video contest. Seventh grader Ben Miron from Pine Hill Waldorf School in Wilton, NH has been named one of the top 10 finalists in the 6th - 8th grade section of this national video contest. The Grand Prize Winner in this division will receive $10,000 for the school to use towards a sustainable project, such as tree plantings, outdoor classrooms, playgrounds, athletic fields, gardens and greenhouses. All kids who entered the contest were required to create a video up to 3 minutes long on the importance of trees -- to themselves, their school, and their community.
Pine Hill Waldorf School is not your average school. Students have the teachers that follow them as they progress grade by grade. The school also takes a very creative approach to education – by combining traditional curriculum with creative programs such as classes in circus arts. Yes, unicycle riding has its own class!
Students were encouraged to be as creative as possible in their entries – for example, by creating a poem, a play, a speech, a song, or a dance. After rigorous scrutiny by a panel of judges, entries from around the country were narrowed down to the 10 best in 3rd – 5th grade and the 10 best in 6th-8th grade the categories of most compelling relative to theme, clarity of message, and creativity.

In his video, Miron explained the uniqueness of his school, and all it has taught him about nature. Tucked away on 38 acres of forest, each grade at this school has their own “Outdoor Classroom” where trees are a centerpiece of their education – and some even get special names.
“The contest sounded like a lot of fun and we thought we could make a video that could help raise money to finish the partially-completed “Children’s Village” at the school,” said Ben Miron. “The Children’s Village will house the kindergarten, preschool, and nursery program the school offers in separate facilities adjacent to the main school.”

Miron knows that the $10,000 grand prize will make a huge difference at his school. As an independent school, they get no assistance in funding from the state and have to rely on other means to keep the school running. The grand prize would be a great asset to continue this school’s environmental education programming.
