Bedford Police: Be On The Lookout For Backyard Bears
Bedford Police provide some tips for residents to avoid unwanted encounters with bears during the foraging season ahead of hibernation.
BEDFORD, NH — A month after a moose took a celebrated dip in a Bedford neighborhood pool, Bedford Police are telling residents to be on the lookout for backyard black bears as they begin to wander into more residential areas. There are some precautions residents can take to make their property less appealing to the hungry bears foraging for food for the next month until it is time to hibernate.
Bedford Police issued the following guidelines for keeping the big fellas out of your backyard:
Take down bird feeders until Dec. 1.

Clean and cover your grill after each use.
Keep your trash secured.

Do not leave pet food outside.
"Usually there is no need to panic if you see a black bear," Bedford Police said. "If they are not causing harm to your property or pets, enjoy nature and take pictures (at a safe distance) if you would like. However, if the bear is posing a threat, call us."

It was about one month ago that a moose took an impromptu dip in a backyard Bedford pool. New Hampshire Fish and Game officials provided some tips then to Patch readers about how to avoid unwanted encounters with bears, deer and moose during the fall season when wildlife often venture into residential areas most.
