BRA: Preserving Our Neighborhoods - What Will It Take?

This will soon be an urgent matter when the bill arrives in the NH Senate

House Bill 399 (HB 399) came to the House floor with an OTP 16-0 by the newly created and obviously stacked "Housing" Committee, and then passed on a voice vote. This means it will likely cross over to the Senate eventually.

On behalf of 1,300 Bedford Residents Assn (BRA) members along with partner groups in Amherst, Barrington, Candia, Francestown, Hampton, Hollis, Jefferson, Londonderry, Merrimack, N. Hampton, N. Swanzey, Peterborough, Rindge, Rochester, Sugar Hill, Swanzey, and Windham, we write this in the hope that the public will become awake and more informed about this issue, and move to do something about it.

We are very concerned about the takeover of local control, initiated by those in state government who think that the state should mandate one-size-fits-all zoning laws. There are already over a dozen bills currently between the Senate Commerce and House 'Housing' committees (Housing is another new, stacked House committee) that chip away at the right of towns to determine their own rate and style of growth. They deal with parking, lot sizes, types of homes, and more.

While some may brush this aside as simply a 'study', further examination of the bill exposes it as a potentially biased group that will follow a pre-determined mission, set to 'discover' that current zoning practices are somehow detrimental to our way of life, which will give it license to propose laws that would disallow towns to enforce their own zoning rules.

Read the bill and see what you think.

Every NH citizens should take the time to evaluate this serious situation as well as look at all bills in the following file that have, or will come before the House Housing and Senate Commerce Committees.

BRA is a non-partisan group which includes many Democrats as well as Republicans who have concerns about this issue. They would like to see single-family zoning preserved.
