Death on Elk Drive in Bedford Investigated

Fire on Monday night took the life of a man.

New Hampshire State Fire Marshal J. William Degnan, Bedford Fire Chief Scott Wiggin, and Bedford Police Chief John J. Bryfonski announce that first responders are investigated the death of a resident at a building fire on 23 Elk Drive in Bedford at around 11 p.m. on Sept. 7, 2015, according to a press statement.

Upon arrival, fire department personnel encountered heavy fire conditions coming from the basement of the two-story single-family home. The first arriving crews attempted to rescue an adult male subject who was reported to be trapped in the basement, but heavy fire conditions prevented crews from affecting the rescue.

After the bulk of the fire was quickly knocked down, a male subject was located on the second floor, and was removed to awaiting EMS personnel. The victim was transported to Catholic Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Positive identification of the victim and cause of death are pending an autopsy that will take place at NH State Medical Examiner’s Office in Concord.

The investigation into the origin and cause of the fire is active and ongoing by members of the State Fire Marshal’s Office – Bureau of Investigations and the Bedford Fire Department. Preliminary indications are that the fire originated in the basement and heavy smoke and products of combustion quickly spread throughout all floors of the house.

State Fire Marshal Degnan would like to remind all citizens of the importance of having working smoke alarms in your home. In the event of a fire, immediately exit your home and call 911. Keep exits clear of debris and have a home fire escape plan.
