Dixville Notch, Other Tiny NH Towns Kick Off Election Day

And the early leader is...

"We're up in New Hampshire" Donald Trump told supporters at a post-midnight rally in Michigan.

Technically, he wasn't wrong.

The first Election Day votes were cast for New Hampshire's vital four electoral votes in three tiny towns, including the famous "turnout" in Dixville Notch.

Hillary Clinton jumped out to an early lead. Donald Trump was barely ahead of Mitt Romney when all eight votes were counted in Dixville Notch. Clinton led with four votes, Trump had two, and Gary Johnson and write-in Mitt Romney were tied with one apiece.

New Hampshire law allows for midnight voting in towns with less than 100 residents and can close once all who were registered to vote and have made clear they intend to vote have done so.

Dixville Notch, Hart's Location, and Millsfield take advantage. Dixville Notch has voted every election at midnight since 1960.

One voter in Dixville Notch registered soon after midnight and one was an absentee ballot.

Millsfield reported voting soon after, with Trump winning 16 votes. Clinton had four and Bernie Sanders got his first Election Day write-in - maybe the first of many.

Hart's Location was much more competitive. Clinton beat Trump, 17-14, while Johnson earned three votes, Sanders two, and John Kasich one.

So all in all, that's 32 for Trump, 25 for Clinton, four for Johnson, three for Sanders, and one for Kasich.

Oh, the excitement.
