Here are the top stories in Bedford today:
- Shorter days, earlier nights, drivers need to be alert: Sleeping an extra hour felt like a luxury when we turned the clocks back at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, but with the end of Daylight Savings Time, there's a new driving danger, warned AAA Mid-Atlantic. They said with shorter days, more people are driving home in the dark and you may find more drowsy drivers on the road. Sleep-deprived drivers cause more than 6,400 deaths and 50,000 injuries in the United States each year, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic said, we gained an hour of sleep but our sleep patterns are disrupted, and changing sleep patterns can result in drowsy drivers. Stay alert, Bedford! And be safe. (Patch)
- A critical nursing shortage has New Hampshire has hospitals offering bonuses and paying nurses for extra shifts. The relentless impact of COVID-19 has left local nursing homes and hospitals in fierce competition to find qualified staff members. Some are offering bonuses if nurses will work extra shifts. On Tuesday, Catholic Medical Center celebrated 11 new fully registered nurses, who were emergency nurse students, with a party and luncheon, but the hospital said they still have 76 nursing openings to fill. "The hospital doesn't mandate overtime, but most nurses are working 50 to 60 hours a week, and have been for months," according to CMC associate chief nursing officer, Jennifer Torosian. Registered nurse Lisa Dillon, said she has been with CMC for 5 years and she wouldn't want to work anyplace else. "The culture here is incredible," Dillon said. (WMUR)
