On September 22, the Friends of Bedford Cemeteries will sponsor a free and fascinating presentation by author and historian Michael Tougias on "Indian Wars of New England" at 7PM in the Bedford old town hall. Mr. Tougias is an award winning author of 18 books and a frequent speaker for New Hampshire Humanities Council. Come learn about this period when 10% of New England's population was killed or kidnapped, much of it right in New Hampshire. This won't be a boring lecture; Mr. Tougias will take us on a 140 year journey of courage, struggle and cunning on all sides of the clashes to control New England.
In his popular presentation, through maps, illustrations and witness accounts, we'll see how each side pursued the struggle: Metacom's uprising, kidnapping to Canada of entire families and incredible journeys of captivated but undefeated colonial women; Roger's Rangers (founder of the US Army Rangers) attack on Saint Francis; the old Fort Number 4 and the victory of a handfull of militiamen against several hundred French and Indians. Come learn of a time when you really needed grit just to stay alive and what it cost to make New Hampshire. Light Refreshments will be served.
