Hey, Hey Carol-Shea

What a C minus grade should mean in politics.

It’s refreshing that once in a blue moon a politician gives themselves an accurate assessment of their term in office. Such is the case with Carol-Shea Porter who recently gave herself a C minus (C -) grade. In education circles a C – is a marginally passing grade recognized only by the institution awarding it. In congressional terms it is unfortunately a passing grade considering the mediocrity of service to the public.

I cringe when I have to give a student a C -. I would prefer to fail them. Why? An F grade obviously denotes failure in performance, so a student is forced to repeat the class to gain the required knowledge and skill to demonstrate proficiency. Not so with a C – grade. The problem is that even though it’s a passing score, a C - denotes sub-par performance and is nothing short of a ‘Super D’, and D stands for ‘duh’!

Here’s the real rub. A C – grade is not transferable to any other institution. Like an F, a C – grade must also be repeated if one hopes to move on. Unlike an F grade, a C – gives the illusion of proficiency when in reality it is way below par in performance. Now since a C – grade is non-transferable, why on earth should New Hampshire voters have that grade transferred over into reelection?
