LAST CHANCE: Get in Shape in March

With less than two weeks remaining National Nutrition Month, Bedford business offers tips to get in shape.

BEDFORD – During National Nutrition Month in March, a franchised women’s fitness studio chain that offers small group personal training in a private, upscale studio, emphasizes the importance of including healthy nutrition choices as part of the company’s results-oriented transformation model that combines weight and cardio training with a balanced nutrition system to help women achieve their fitness goals. National Nutrition Month® is an annual nutrition education and information campaign sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and the development of sound eating and physical activity habits.

Glenn Nazarian, a health and fitness expert and the owner of Get In Shape For Women in Bedford, shares the following important tips about how to incorporate healthy nutritional habits into a successful health and fitness plan:

1. Eat less while still enjoying meals. Avoid oversized portions by choosing to eat using smaller plates and bowls. Cooking at home allows for better portion control compared to the enlarged portions typically served at restaurants. Another benefit of home-cooked meals is being in charge of what goes into the food, making it easier to control calories. When eating out, don’t feel pressure to finish everything on the plate, and choose options with lower calories that include plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Get In Shape For Women’s health and fitness experts can provide information on the ideal amount of calories that should be consumed each day based on weight, height, activity level, and personal fitness goals.

2. Include healthy, balanced nutritional choices in each meal. Eat a variety of vegetables with every meal—the greener the better. All types of vegetables—including fresh, canned and frozen—are acceptable and vital for optimal health. Replace traditional sources of saturated fats like pizza, cheese and hotdogs with a variety of lean choices like poultry, eggs, fish, nuts and beans. It’s not neuroscience that a healthy and balanced diet is crucial to maintaining a healthy weight—that’s why proper nutrition support is part of every training program at Get In Shape For Women.

3. Set realistic goals. Every fitness and weight loss plan should begin by setting measurable goals and having the commitment to reach those goals. Get In Shape For Women helps members set an achievable goal and then holds them accountable for reaching it, with weight and body-fat percentage checked every two weeks. Knowing what your goal is and setting a realistic plan with specific action steps is the best way to achieve desired results.

4. Avoid empty calories. More than one-third of all calories consumed by Americans are solid fats and added sugars, according to the American Dietetic Association. Sugary beverages like soda, fruit juices, and many tasty coffee drinks are packed with high levels of sugar. Too much sugar is dangerous because the body transfers it into fat. Cut out empty calories by drinking at least 64 ounces of water instead of sugary drinks or artificially-flavored beverages.
