MANCHESTER, NH — The president of Manchester Community College is leaving next month for a job in Boston.

Brian Bicknell steps down July 5 to become chief operating officer of the Boys and Girls Club of Boston after nearly 10 years of working in higher education at MCC. Before working in the Queen City, he worked at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology in Boston, the Montserrat College of Art, and The Boston Conservatory. Bicknell was appointed president of MCC in 2020.

“This is a bittersweet moment for me, but also a unique opportunity to serve young people in my home state,” Bicknell said. “This has been an incredible experience, and although I am excited about my next steps, my heart will always be tied to Manchester Community College, its staff and faculty, and the amazing students I have had the honor of coming to know during my tenure.”

During his time in Manchester, Bicknell was heralded for strengthening academic offerings — including workforce development programs, healthcare, defense, and other sectors. He also promoted an open-door policy with political leaders, businesses, residents, and community orgs to increase awareness about the school. Bicknell and the school also partnered with Dean Kamen and the Advanced Regenerative Manufacturing Institute to connect students with 21st Century jobs.

Mark Rubinstein, the chancellor of the state’s community college system, commended Bicknell for being “a tireless advocate” for students and the community.

Chuck Lloyd, the vice chancellor of the system, has been nominated to be interim president. He said he was excited to face the challenge.

“There is a great deal of innovation and collaboration occurring at MCC that aligns with our statewide strategic initiatives and many strong community partnerships that enhance opportunities in New Hampshire’s largest city,” he said. “I anticipate being able to leverage my history in the system, experience as a previous college president, and my role as vice chancellor to support and amplify the great work at MCC.”
