Manchester Firefighters Back Stephen In District 4 Re-Election Bid
IAFF Local 856 says it supports the District 4 Executive Councilor John Stephen ahead of the Nov. 3 general election.
MANCHESTER, NH — Manchester Professional Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 856, has endorsed Executive Councilor John Stephen for re-election in District 4, according to an announcement released in Manchester.
The endorsement came in a letter signed by Joseph Michael, president of Local 856 and chairman of its political action committee. In that letter, the firefighters wrote, “John Stephen has our support as a candidate who can represent the interests of our communities and work toward a stronger, safer future for the citizens of New Hampshire.”
The letter also said, “As professional firefighters, we understand firsthand the importance of public safety, responsible leadership, and ensuring that our first responders have the resources and support necessary to protect the people they serve.”

Stephen responded to the endorsement with a statement that focused on front-line firefighters and the role of the Executive Council.
“This endorsement belongs to the line firefighters. They’re the ones on the trucks at three in the morning, going into buildings everyone else is running out of, and then coming back and doing it again the next shift,” he said.

Stephen also pointed to his past work in public safety.
“I spent years at the Department of Safety and I know what that job costs them and their families. When a contract or an appointment comes before the Council that touches their equipment, their staffing or their safety, I’ll keep reading it with them in mind,” Stephen said.
Stephen added, “I thank President Joe Michael and every member of Local 856 for their trust.”
Stephen was elected to the Executive Council in 2024.
