Meet the Owners: The Purple Finch Cafe

For Jeff and Julie Marshall, Bedford's newest diner-style restaurant is a dream come true.

Jeff and Julie Marshall simply couldn't find enough time for their budding family.

So what'd they do?

They opened a full-service restaurant.

Indeed, as crazy as it may seem to free up time while running a new business, the Marshall's thought it through. They decided to open a breakfast and lunch cafe and catering company, which allows them to be home each night to spend time with each other and with their two young children.

The opened its doors last August and has quickly become the breakfast destination of choice in town, and one of the more popular spots to grab a quick and affordable lunch. The restaurant also features a coffee bar for those who only have time for a quick caffeine or pastry fix.

Bedford Patch recently pinned down Jeff and Julie for the following question and answer session:

How long did you envision opening a full-service cafe?

Well, everyone dreams of being their own boss, right? But seriously, it was after we had our second child that we really wanted to be home at night with the kids. Before that one of us was working days and the other working nights. There was no real family time.

What made you choose Bedford and the specific location?

We checked out the area and thought Bedford really lacked a good non-chain breakfast/lunch restaurant.

Do either of you have prior restaurant experience?

We both have been in restaurants since we were old enough to work. Julie has a degree in Hospitality Management from UNH.

Has the experience exceeded expectations so far?

Definitely. Bedford has welcomed us with open arms!

What has been the greatest challenge since opening?

Advertising. As a small business we do not have a huge budget for advertising, which can get very expensive. We wish we could get better roadside signage.

What makes the Purple Finch unique?

Great Food with personality – made with fresh, local ingredients – and superior service!

What community-oriented initiatives does the Purple Finch participate in?

We have started hosting fundraisers for local organizations. For example. March 10, any table that mentions the Bedford cheerleaders will get 10% of the check! We have also worked with the Animal Rescue League and the Palace Theatre.

Have you followed your original business plan, and if no, why not?

Yes, for the most part. We have increased our number of gluten free items to meet the high demand. Unfortunately, we had to remove some of the organic items from the menu in order to not increase our prices, but in the summer we plan to use more of the Farmer’s Markets for even fresher fruits and veggies.

What's your most popular dish?

The Funky Chicken Sandwich, served grilled or crispy with bacon, cheddar cheese, honey mustard, lettuce and tomato on a grilled hoagie roll. Or the Grill-Billy Benedict for breakfast.

What's the piece of feedback you receive most?

People seem to be really proud to bring new customers in to try us out. We love that about Bedford people! They love to support the small businesses.
