The New Hampshire Disadvantage

New Hampshire Quality of Life

I for one am tired of hearing politicians chant the same worn out slogans of “The New Hampshire Advantage” and “Live Free or Die”. As an adjunct professor in the Community College System of New Hampshire my quality-of-life is impacted by the following fiscal issues.

The Worst States for Property Taxes

The Tax Foundation found that homeowners in New Hampshire were #3 in paying the most in property taxes:

To be fair “Property taxes are not set solely at the state level. Cities, counties and local school boards get involved, so taxes in one area of a state might be higher than those in other areas. Several states offer property tax exemptions for senior citizens, veterans and the disabled”.

However, there are two caveats:

1. Veterans credit varies from town to town. Hillsborough where I live is $500 (See RSA 72:28). But some towns continue to be considerably less! So much for revering our veterans!

2. Over age 65 tax credit gets reduced significantly depending on income. So much for honoring the elderly!

Most expensive state university systems

The state with the highest charges for tuition and fees for in-state residents is … Wait for it … New Hampshire!

And while you’re add it, why don’t you ask the Chancellor and Human Resources of the Community College System of New Hampshire why adjuncts who teach 75% of the classes and currently teaching, are not considered as “internal candidates” when applying for jobs!
