Nyquist: I'd Appreciate Your Vote for State Senate

Democrat, attorney, and town moderator for New Boston asks Bedford voters to consider his candidacy.

By Lee Nyquist

I am running again this year for state Senate and I respectfully request your vote.

Bedford citizens are proud of the town they have built together. Award-winning schools, good public services, and responsive town government officials make it a wonderful community and a great place to raise a family. Unfortunately, the last few years of state budgets coming out of Concord have drastically increased the reliance on the local property tax, the tax that hits our pocketbooks most directly and most significantly. Therefore, our overall tax burden has gone up not down.

It doesn’t need to be this way. We have been letting certain state senators get away saying that they are tax savers when they are actually tax downshifters who increase our overall net tax burden. It is easy for a state politician on the state level to vote “No, No, No,” but his constituents later pay the price and more on their local property tax bills. No matter what level of government is funding necessary public services, it is still our money that pays for them. Leadership and bipartisanship are needed to most efficiently allocate your tax dollars to accomplish long-delayed road and bridge construction and repair, and fund schools and other services. I know I’m the person who can most effectively deliver that for the town of Bedford.

As the town moderator of New Boston for the last twenty years, I’ve shown that calmly listening to all sides of an issue and frank conversation can lead to effective, consensus decisions that accurately reflect the will of the town while also being good public policy. I know bringing this same style to Concord will help me cut through the noise and ensure the town of Bedford has the resources it needs to continue the great place it is to live and raise families.

Bedford citizens know that raising a family is the most important thing in life. I’ve been blessed to be the father of five children who have attended public schools, including twins who will be second graders at New Boston Central School this Fall. One of the major reasons I have chosen to run for office is to ensure that every child in New Hampshire has the same opportunities to succeed my children have. Strong public education is fundamental.

We can ensure our state has NO income or sales tax but can still effectively fund necessary public services without downshifting the tax burden disproportionately onto the property taxpayer, thereby increasing, not decreasing our overall tax burden.

I respectfully ask for your vote to be your state Senator.
