Police Seek Tips After Dog Is Abandoned At Animal Shelter

The poor pooch was put down after being left at the doorstep of the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire in Bedford without food or water.

BEDFORD, NH — Police in Bedford are asking for the public’s help identifying the owners of a blue sedan that was caught on camera about the same time a malnourished dog was left at the doorstep of the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire this weekend. In an alert, police believe that two suspects – a man and a woman, both white – reportedly abandoned the adult female golden retriever in a mulch pile near the building’s back door. The dog was left without any food or water, according to Chief John J. Bryfonski of the Bedford Police Department.

“Officers observed that the dog was in extremely poor condition and refused to eat or drink anything,” Bryfonski noted. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Bedford NH Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

Investigators believe that the pair left the dog outside the building at around 7 p.m. on Aug. 27, 2017, not long after the shelter had closed. The dog was left without any food or water for more than 13 hours.

“Following a medical examination by a veterinarian, the dog had to be euthanized due to its extensive medical issues, many of which could be attributed to neglect over a long period of time,” Bryfonski said. “Employees of the ARL determined that the dog was approximately 10- to 12-years old.”

Bryfonski called the animal cruelty incident “disturbing” and requested anyone with any information to call police as soon as possible.
