Nashua Police Rescue Man Who Jumped From Bridge

NASHUA, NH — A "despondent" man was rescued after jumping off the Veterans Memorial Bridge into the frigid Merrimack River Tuesday afternoon, according to police. The man was pulled from the river by police officers and suffered from hypothermia. He was hospitalized and expected to recover.

The rescue happened at about 1:30 p.m., according to Nashua police Lt. Thomas Bolton. A witness called police and said the man scaled a guardrail and jumped into the river. Nashua and Hudson police officers arrived and pulled the man from the water. The bridge near downtown Nashua connects to Hudson. It sits about 50 feet above the water.

The man fell a "significant distance" into the river. The temperature at the time was about 35 degrees.
